ATM Area Riservata

The Integrated Fare System (STIBM)

The system extends to all municipals within the City of Milan metropolitan area and the Province of Monza and Brianza.

The system uses the City of Milan as the reference point where surrounding areas have then been divided into circular sections each representing a fare zone.

The tickets and travel cards will be valid for use with the ATM transport network and suburban public transport lines operating within the Integrated Fare System (STIBM) area.

All the innovations of the The fare system

The The system uses the City of Milan as the reference point where surrounding areas were divided into circular sections, 5kms wide, each representing a fare zone were an identification code has been assigned.

The City of Milan has 21 municipalities bordering with it (refer to the table below) and the Rho Fieramilano station (Metro Line 1). This area corresponds to 3 fare zones and is identified by codes Mi1 - Mi3.

The fare zones following Mi3 are categorised according to their distance from Milan, and can be identified by codes Mi4 to Mi9 (refer to the table). Each municipals’ stops and stations are assigned to a single fare zone.

3 zone travel tickets Mi1 - Mi3 allow you to travel:

  • Metro Lines 1, 3 and 5
  • Metro Line 2 from Assago Milanofiori Forum and P.za Abbiategrasso Chiesa Rossa to Cologno Nord and Cascina Burrona (inclusive)

In order to travel from Milan to the stations of Cernusco S. N., Villa Fiorita, Cassina de' Pecchi, Bussero (located in the Mi4 fare zone) a 4 zone travel ticket (Mi1 - Mi4 ticket) is required; to stations of Villa Pompea, Gorgonzola, Cascina Antonietta (located in the Mi5 zone), a 5 zone travel ticket (Mi1 - Mi5 ticket) is required; to Gessate (located in the Mi6 zone), a 6 zone travel ticket (Mi1 - Mi6 ticket) is required.

The tickets and travel cards will be valid for use with the ATM transport network, suburban public transport lines and Trenord rail lines operating within the Integrated Fare System (STIBM) area.

The fare between two locations, i.e. the starting point and the destination of the journey, is calculated on the basis of the number of zones travelled (increasing in value with each additional zone travelled).

In Milan, the minimum fare that can be purchased is 3 fare zones (Mi1 - Mi3). In all other municipals of the System, the minimum fare that can be purchased is equal to 2 zones and costs the same as the minimum fare ticket price. This ticket also applies for journeys within the same municipal and between municipals belonging to the same fare zone. For each additional zone the cost of the ticket increases, therefore the 3 zone ticket costs €2.20, the 4 zone ticket €2.60 etc.

In order to travel to Milan, the following distinction has been made between tickets, weekly/monthly/annual travel cards:

  • for ordinary tickets, 10 trip tickets, daily tickets, 3 day tickets and weekly travel cards the minimum price that can be purchased is 3 zones (ordinary ticket price, €2.20); these tickets allow you to travel throughout the City of Milan and up to 21 municipalities within the Mi3 zone;
  • to travel in the municipal of Milan there are monthly and annual urban travel cards available. In order to travel between Milan and the 21 municipals in the Mi3 zone and between Milan and Rho Fieramilano station on the Metro Line 1, it’s necessary to purchase monthly and annual travel cards which are valid for 3 zones.

  • The The Integrated Fare System allows you to travel along several routes, combining multiple means of transport, both continuously and with several intermediate stops (pertaining to the scope of time validity and the zones purchased). This makes it possible to complete roundtrips using the same ticket, even with multiple entrances to the Metro and on Trenord.
  • The The ordinary ticket: 3 zone Mi1 - Mi3 (€2,20), with 90 minutes of validity, allows the possibility to travel throughout the City of Milan and the 21 municipalities of the Mi3 zone and by metro to the termination stations of Rho Fieramilano (Metro Line 1) and of Assago Milanofiori Forum (Metro Line 2).This type of travel within the old system would have resulted in a higher fare;
  • The zones validity are indicated on the ticket, along with the time validity;
  • The benefits which are valid throughout the area will be introduced for people under 26 years of age, for seniors over 65 years of age and for people with low income;
  • Children under the age of 14 travel free showing a valid identity document. In addition, optionally, one of the Under 11s and Under 14s cards created specifically for them can be requested through the reserved area of the Atm.it website;
  • Teachers accompanying school groups, up to high school, will be able to travel for free on the Milan urban network managed by ATM and on the urban routes of Trenord services;

For this type of journey, the fare purchased must include the Mi1 zone. If you travel between Milan and the 21 municipalities in the Mi3 zone or between Milan and the Rho Fieramilano station (Metro Line 1), you must purchase a fare from 3 Mi1-Mi3 zones (e.g. the ordinary ticket €2.00).

If you travel between Milan and the localities within the Mi4, Mi5, Mi6, Mi7, Mi8 and Mi9 zones you need to buy a fare from 4 to 9 zones or Mi1 - Mi4, Mi1 - Mi5, etc. up to Mi1 - Mi9.

For example:

  • from Milan (Mi1 zone) to Rho Fieramilano station (Metro line 1) (Mi3 zone) = 3 zone Mi1 - Mi3 fare
  • from Milan Loreto station (Metro Line 1, Mi1 zone) to Sesto San Giovanni (Mi3 zone) = 3 zone Mi1 - Mi3 fare
  • from Milan (Mi1 zone) to San Vittore Olona (Mi6 zone) = 6 zone Mi1 - Mi6 fare
  • from Trezzano sul Naviglio (Mi4 zone) to Milan (Mi1 zone) = 4 zone Mi1 - Mi4 fare

In order to travel between suburban locations, a fare from 2 to 7 zones must be purchased, depending on the number of zones travelled.

For example:

  • from Monza (Mi4 zone) to Arcore (Mi5 zone) = 2 zone Mi4-Mi5 fare
  • from Gessate (zone Mi6) to Vimodrone (zone Mi3) = 4 zone Mi3-Mi6 fare

The minimum fare that can be purchased in the suburban area is 2 zones even if you travel between municipals located in the same fare zone or between stops located within the same municipal. Since there are no valid travel tickets in a single fare zone, it is necessary to purchase the one that includes the required zone and the previous zone or the next zone, for example:

  • from Bussero to Cassina de’ Pecchi (both located in the Mi4 zone) it is possible to use:
    • 2 zones Mi3 - Mi4 fare
    • 2 zones Mi4 - Mi5 fare
  • for travels within the municipality of Legnano (Mi7 zone) it is possible to use:
    • 2 zones Mi6 - Mi7 fare
    • 2 zones Mi7 - Mi8 fare

If travelling between suburban locations, you cross Milan borders, it’s necessary to purchase the Mi1 fare zone; the fare is therefore equal to the fare zones included between Mi1 and the fare zone of the furthest location from Milan included in the journey, for example:

  • from Pero (Mi3 zone) to Gessate (Mi6 zone) = 6 zones Mi1 - Mi6 fare
  • from Monza (Mi4 zone) to Abbiategrasso (Mi7 zone) = 7 zones Mi1 - Mi7 fare

Warning: the fare between two locations may vary depending on the route of the lines used, for example:

  • from Assago (Mi3 zone) to Rozzano (Mi3 zone) using the 328 line = 2 zones Mi3 - Mi4 fare
  • from Assago (Mi3 zone) to Rozzano (Mi3 zone) using the metro Line 2 + tram 15 = 3 zones Mi1 - Mi3 fare

The following ordinary tickets are available with the The Fare System:

  • Ordinary ticket Mi1 - Mi3: the time validity from the first validation varies with the number of zones purchased: 75 minutes for two zones + 15 minutes for each additional zone. In Milan, the minimum fare that can be purchased is 3 zones and is valid from the first validation for 90 minutes;
  • 10 trip tickets: only blocks of 10 tickets with time validity depending on the number of zones purchased. The trips cannot be used on road services managed by operators other than ATM and Trenord; it cannot be used by more than one person at the same time;
  • Daily ticket: is valid for 24 hours from the first validation, without limit to the number of journeys within the territory defined by the zones purchased;
  • 3 day ticket: is valid for 3 consecutive days from the day of the first validation until the end of the service on the third day, without limit to the number of journeys within the territory defined by the zones purchased;
  • Weekly travel card: valid from Monday to Sunday of the same week until the end of the service of Sunday, without limit to the number of journeys within the territory defined by the zones purchased;
  • Monthly travel card: valid for one calendar month for an unlimited number of journeys within the territory defined by the zones purchased;
  • Annual travel card: valid for twelve consecutive calendar months for an unlimited number of journeys within the territory defined by the zones purchased

All fare options provided by the Municipality of Milan can be used with all subsidised travel cards fare options within the The Integrated Fare System. General rules of use

The ticket allows you, within the period of validity and zones indicated on the document, to travel along several routes combining several means of transport, both continuously and with more intermediate stops; it allows the use of all means of public transport integrated within the Integrated Fare System.

Occasional travel documents (ordinary tickets, 10 trip tickets, daily tickets, 3 day tickets) are activated with the first validation that must be carried out at the beginning of the journey, within the above ground transport vehicle and at the turnstile entrances in the Metro stations.

Travel Cards (weekly, monthly and annual travel cards) are valid from the date of issue or indicated on the tickets (in case of tickets issued on magnetic media). The validation must be repeated at each transfer, making the last validation within the validity period of the ticket.

The ticket cannot be transferable after validation. The ticket must be kept with the passenger until the end of the journey and must be shown to the control staff, if/when required, even at the destination stop or leaving the metro turnstiles

Read the "Rules of conduct for passengers on tram, bus and trolleybus lines" and the "Rules for passengers on the metro lines" in the attachments to this page.
